TELFORD SNOOKER LEAGUE

Match Report - 10th April 2002

Divisional Individuals

Local snooker players took a break from the usual league competition last week when the Telford Snooker League staged its annual divisional individual competitions with the third division competition, played at Wellington Billiard Hall, being the only one to reach a conclusion.

Maddocks D's Colin Smith proved to be in tremendous form throughout the evening as he lifted the Third Division title with an excellent 2-1 win over Little Dawley G's Graham Copson in the final which ended just before 1.00am in the morning.

Colin began the final by knocking in a 31 break to take the opening frame. But Graham replied in similar fashion and a run of 30 drew the frame score level at one apiece. However it was Colin who took the deciding frame to clinch the title.

Colin started the evening with a win over Frank Williams and followed up with further victories over Byron Mitchell and John Tranter before getting the better of Hills Lane's Richie Jones in the semi-final.

Graham's route to the final began with a narrow 51-42 first round win over Bayley D's Brian Aberdeen and he followed up by beating Brian's team-mate Dave Dudley in the next round.

Kevin Smith was next to fall by the wayside before Graham edged out Billiard Hall F's Rob Cook on the final black to secure his place in the final.

Bayley player Dave Dudley accounted for Alan Davies in round one before falling at the next hurdle and club mate Craig Johnson also fell at the second round stage when, after defeating team-mate Mick Healey, he lost out to Kevin Smith.

Rob Cook's road to the semi's began with a good win over fellow Billiard Hall player Chris Fletcher before accounting for Criag Whitehead, conqueror of Roy Lowe in round one.

Another Bayley man lost out to Rob in the Quarters as Darren Rhoades was unable to stop the home player progressing to the semis.

Darren still left happy in the knowledge that he had defeated his captain Steve Lane in the second round after beating last year's runner-up Steven Weatherall in round one. Steve Lane must surely be looking to change his lucky socks in readiness for the Team Knockout final after they seem to have lost at least some of their power in recent weeks. However he did produce one of the performances of the night when he accounted for one of the pre-tournament favourites Kev Whitehead in the opening round.

In the lower half of the draw John Tranter began his journey to the quarter-finals with a fine win over his team captain Chris Durham before producing an excellent performance against Lee Elcock in round two.

Ian Johnson also made it through to the second round after defeating Ken Davies - but he was unable to stop Stephen Ward moving into the last eight after Stephen had earlier defeated Jason Mills.

The first division competition was played once again at the Bayley Club and there were, to say the least, a few shocks early on as he competition was played down to the last eight - the quarter-finals onwards will now be played at the Bayley Club on Wednesday 24th April (Start Time 7.45pm).

Alan Turner rolled back the years as he potted a superb pink before sinking the final black to defeat Neil Price on his way to a quarter-final place against John Fallows.

Alan continued his good form in the second round when he defeated another Anstice A player in the shape of Phil Reynolds, the Madeley man having earlier accounted for Bayley E's Dave France in round one.

Shifnal A's John Fallows got the better of Bayley E's Martin Watkins in the opening round before beating Broseley player Carl Walker for a place in the last eight against Alan Turner.

Chris Morgan-Adams played some electrifying snooker in his opening round match against Ian Eldridge but he suffered a power failure in his next game as Andy Kendrick pulled the plug on the Bayley players aspirations to book a quarter-final tie against Maddock's Ian Skelton who accounted for his Oakengates captain Dave France, on the black, in the previous round.

Graham Darrell produced a super display to come out on top against Shaun Harris in their first round encounter only to fall in the next round as Matt Bailey benefited from a fortunate fluke on the last red to book his place in the last eight where he will play team-mate Darren Pountney.

Darren's competition began with a first round victory over his Hills Lane compatriot Tim Hicks and followed with a good win over last year's runner-up Phil Davis.

Last year's winner Steve Fletcher just edged out Ian Duffy on the final black in round one before falling to John Squire who played some excellent snooker to leave Steve requiring a snooker with one red left.

The outcome of the second division competition is also in doubt after the initial field of 26 was played down to the last four at Shifnal War Memorial Club.

Spencer Rowley is already through to the final as his semi-final opponent, Phil Whitby, is on holiday when the semis and final are due to be played and in the final Spencer will play either Pete Wilkes or Wayne Weeks.

Spencer recorded the highest break of the evening when he knocked in a run of 41 on the way to defeating Wally Harper in round two - having earlier defeated M Shabir in the first round.

In the quarter-final the Shifnal F man got the better of an in-form Jim Hill, who himself had compiled a break of 31 in his opening encounter with L Badhan.

Phil Whitby defeated Fraser MacKinnon and Chris Morris after initially seeing off the challenge of Nigel Wallcroft in round one.

One of the best games of the evening saw Chris Painter go 35 points ahead of fellow Shifnal player Jeff Sparkes only for Jeff to fight his way back into contention on the colours. However it was Chris, with a terrific screw shot on the final pink, who eventually took the frame on the black before bowing out in the quarter-finals against Wayne Weeks.

Wayne booked his place in the last eight with an excellent win over the in-form A Ali from the Billiard Hall. The X team player had produced a super display in the opening round, twice knocking in breaks of 22, to defeat one of the pre-tournament favourites Dave Peplow.

Pete Wilkes' run to the semis began when he defeated competitions secretary Nigel Stallard before beating Barrie Easthope who in turn had beaten Ray Whitehead in his opening match.
